Deni 5205 Fully Automatic 1-1/2-Quart Ice-Cream Maker with Candy Crusher, White Reviews By Customers

I have recently purchased this product about a week ago and have made 3 successful ice cream recipes so far. The first thing I noticed when turning on the machine is that it is rather noisy, although the kids didn't complain about not being able to hear the TV. The candy crusher was a bit of a disappointment, as it is quite cheaply made I thought the cold smarties were going to break the flimsy plastic apart. I would recommend using a food processor instead of the candy crusher, for ease of use, and the amount of elbow grease it takes to grind a small box of Smarties is mind boggling. The upside of the ice cream maker you ask? Well, the ice cream is AMAZING!! Who knew that home made ice cream would taste one thousand times better than the stuff you buy in the store, even the really expensive brands. It is so fresh and without all the additives that they cram in there, have you ever read the ingredients on store bought? The ice cream maker's texture is a bit soft, but firms up in no time in the freezer to a wonderful consistency of hard ice cream. The whole family enjoys the process of making the ice cream and eating it together with all the inevitable oohs and ahhs. Check Special Price!

Delicious Ice Cream is the Result! - D. L. - az
I've made ice cream with this machine four times and it has been delicious every time with every recipe that I have tried. I made a mistake the first time I used it (I don't count that time), I didn't read the instructions as closely as I should have, the Deni should be turned on and the cylinder should be turning at all times, if you stop the machine during the process, it doesn't turn back on and your ice cream process is over, finished or not! Lesson learned... :)

Great Product and very enjoyable to use - Patricia Brouillette - Fort Drum, NY United States
I received this as a present, originally had an issue with the freezer canister, and called Customer service and they immediately sent out an replacement. Since it was only a part that needed to replaced, they sent me that one part. I had it within 2-3 days of calling them. Since then it has worked beautifully. My 3 year old daughter loves helping me make the ice cream.

OK but not as good as my old Deni Scoop Factory - C. M. Horace - San Francisco
I bought the Deni ice cream maker with candy crusher (Model 5210) to replace my older Deni Ice Cream Factory machine. I've made ice cream now three times in this new one, and all three times the motor stops churning before the ice cream gets to the soft serve phase. It makes an uneven and inconsistent product that is more frozen to the sides of the cannister and bottom of the cannister, while the ice cream in the center is still very runny. The third time this happened, I took the cannister off the new machine and finished it off on my old one. The old one churned the ice cream to the perfect fluffy soft serve consistency, the new one is dense and runny, and freezes rock hard. I am disappointed the newer model isn't as good as my old one. The motor base is light weight, flimsy and all plasticized, while the older version (Model 5100) is a great little machine that is sturdy and solid. I expected more from the new model, thought it would be improved and even better. But sadly, it isn't. I would save my pennies and not purchase this one. At least the cannister and paddle fits my old one, now I have spare parts! The extra cannister will come in handy if I need a larger amount of ice cream. There's a Deni 5400 Scoop Factory now, and I think I should have bought that one instead.Deni Automatic Ice Cream Maker with Candy Crusher Attachment

Cuisinart ICE-20 Automatic 1-1/2-Quart Ice-Cream Maker, White

| Monday, December 21, 2009

Ok,
Yet another great find at my tiny little goodwill store - .00 and they said they would take it back if it did not work properly LOL for 3 bucks I guess it's worth a shot...
First of all, I read a bunch of the reviews about the bowl not freezing so I was afraid that this might happen to me. I put the bowl in the freezer for a day and I could still hear the liquid swishing around - I was anxious to try it anyway and ended up with... liquid... ok... i was going away so I put the bowl back in the freezer and left it for the 4 days that I was gone - still not solid... hmm getting a bit frustrated now... looked at the temperature dial for my freezer and saw that it was set a bit too low (meaning a higher freezer temp) so I adjusted the dial one notch and waited about 24 hours.
YAY!!! a frozen bowl - the problem was my temp setting. Once I fixed that all was well. The bowl freezes up perfectly in less than a day now. I have used the simple vanilla recipe twice - once with oreos and once with 'green & black' organic baking chocolate chopped up - yummy and perfect - came out like soft serve but was the perfect texture after an hour or so in the freezer. I've made the peach frozen yogurt, easy and good. A few days ago I made the gourmet vanilla - added finely chopped oreos and it basically turned into chocolate cookies and cream ice cream - decadent! That was gone in one sitting between the four of us. I found that the custard recipe seems to decrease a bit when cooked, so you may want to increase your amounts a bit - you may have to play with it to get it right. Anyway, the cuisinart does what it is supposed to; without the bother of rock salt - nice.

Cuisinart Ice 20 Ice-Cream Maker - Carol Schlotterbeck - Kokomo, IN
I bought this product on the recommendation of my son to make cranberry ice for Thanksgiving. I did everything that I expected it to do. Great machine.

It is just a noisy milk-shake maker - Rat Kiley - SF Bay Area, CA
I feel deceived by the marketing department of Cuisinart. The box says it is an ice cream maker, but if you read the instructions carefully you can tell that it doesn't make ice cream but milkshakes instead. You won't be able to store the "ice cream" you make in this machine in your freezer without it turning into a chunk of ice. The cooling capacity of the bowl that comes with the machine isn't sufficient to make real ice cream. Maybe if you bought a replacement bowl, froze both of them overnight in your freezer, then ran it for 20 minutes to start the batch, and swapped bowls, maybe it would make actual ice cream - I don't know. It also makes a lound grinding / vibrating noise while it is in operation. Also I noticed that it doesn't churn the ice cream well enough - sometimes you have to stir it through the hole in the top to keep it from getting stuck.

I recommend sticking with the old fashioned ice cream makers that use rock-salt and ice, or buy an ice cream maker with a compressor. However, if you have an instant use for 1 1/2 quarts of ice cream every time you make it, then this machine could work for you. Just be prepared to consume it all before it melts.

I bought this item for my brother-in-law's birthday. So far he has made grape, vanilla and root beer ice cream which all turned out great! It did freeze up once but he did something and got it working again...that's the only reason for not rating it a 5!

Devil in the Details - Daysha Hughes -
i needed this ice cream maker for thanksgiving. got it, took it out the box, inspected, and assembled it. it looked great and everything seemed to be just fine. the instructions advise that you soak the bucket for a couple of hours prior to the first use. on thanksgiving day i soaked the bucket and came back moments later and noticed the water level was declining more rapidly than expected. i refilled and tried again. the same thing happened. not a little water was coming out, but a steady, constant stream of significant amount. i could literally see the water going down. i look closer to see where the water is coming from, and i see a crack in the wood on both sides. i can actually move the pieces. well, we figured we would hand crank the ice cream in in a tub to collect the water. after about an hour or more of cranking the machine, it was still easy to turn/crank the handle. what is supposed to happen is as the ice cream freezes, it is supposed to be more difficult to turn/crank. we hand cranked for a little longer with little progress. That is when we used the automatic, electric component. well. after a while, it did finally freeze, but not as hard/firm as it should have if done by hand.

i had used the product so i couldnt return it.

pros: pretty

cons: wood barrel cracks going on both sides of the barrel. this was not visible to the naked eye until it was time to soak the bucket. water left the bucket constantly
did not freeze when using manual hand crank
when using the automatic/electric component, it took a long time, but finally froze. however the consistency/firmness could have been much better and firmer.
took way to long

Classic Ice Cream Maker - Ruby G. Turner -
This was my third try at finding a high quality ice cream maker without a high price. This product was the best of both! I highly recommend it. A note oc caution:
be sure to read the instructions before using it.

Ice cream makers only lukewarm - K. Rhea - Columbus, MS
I was disappointed with the overall quality of the icecream maker. While not necessarily shoddy, a little more care in manufacturing would have made a lot of difference. Redwood would have been a much better choice than pine. The handle kept falling off. That being said,it did its job well though. It makes icecream exactly as it should.Maxi-Matic EIM-506 Elite Gourmet 6-Quart Old-Fashioned Pine-Bucket Electric/Manual Ice-Cream Maker

Cuisinart Ice-45 Mix-It-In Soft-Serve 1.5 Quart Ice-Cream Maker - White

Customize your cone with this ingenious soft serve ice cream maker that automatically adds up to three of your favorite mix-ins. We received this as a family Christmas gift. My son has severe nut allergies and we cannot buy much in the way of ice cream products from the store. Plus I love soft serve ice cream. So this has saved the day. We use it almost every night. We mix up the liquid when we make dinner. We put it in the refrigerator until dinner is ready. Then a few minutes into dinner I hop up insert the bowl and pour in the mixture. The only catch is the recipes in the booklet are way too much volume to get a proper consistency of ice cream. So we half all recipes and it it works great. We make the vanilla most often and use 1/2 cup 2% milk and 1 cup nonfat. The full fat version in the recipe book is yummy, but not appropriate (way too much fat) for our family given we have it for desert most nights. Approx. 20 minutes ice cream is done. We have done as much as a 3/4 recipe (3/4 cup 2% - 1 1/2 cup non fat)and it works. But that is the maximum you can use if you want it to freeze to a proper soft serve ice cream consistency. The lid also tends to pop up once the consistency gets thicker so we use one of my 5 lb weights to rest on top and keep the lid in place. The only draw back is if you have a bigger family (it is just the 3 of us) it doesn't make a bunch of ice cream relative quantity. This is a great machine. We all highly recommend it.

Not bad for the first time trying - Tammy I. - Oregon, USA
We "bought" one of these using our reward points from a credit card.
Used it last night for the first time. It worked just as it said it would. We froze the bowl overnight, making sure there was no noise when we shook it. Whisked the ingredients in a bowl, turned the maker on and slowly poured the ingredients in. The grandkids watched it almost the whole 20 minutes! We made the vanilla last night and are trying the chocolate tonight. The first little bit that comes out is liquid (as it says in the booklet) and it takes a little practice getting in the cone, but over-all we all enjoyed it. I'm ordering a second bowl to have on-hand for larger gatherings. (Although, we figured the cost out - it's cheaper to buy store bought ice cream on sale! too bad...)

Underpowered, soft-soft-soft serve! - R. Mitchell - Seattle, WA
This is a poor quality product with a weak motor. As indicated in other reviews, the mixing bowl requires pre-freezing overnight (not a total surprise in a unit of this price). The BIG problem is that the motor quits spinning the paddles long before the ice-cream is of a consistency for "soft-serve" ice cream, resulting in a rapidly melting mess of ice cream. Furthermore, the dispensing of the ice cream is painfully slow. Just when you think you might (*might*) be able to get away with spooning out the ice cream that the machine could not dispense because of an overheating motor...you remember that the bottom of the ice cream mixing bowl has a hole in it (where the ice cream should dispense)...so just taking apart the machine is a mess. Try getting the ice cream out and you'll waste a lot of effort, waste a lot of ice cream, and have a real mess on your hands (literally).

SKIP THIS MACHINE and either buy a traditional ice-based freezer, or a simple frozen gel chill machine or go for the gusto and get a real freezer with a built in compressor...but don't buy this or you will be terribly disappointed!

A really dumb product - James W. Cooper - Wilton, CT
Not to imply that the ice cream maker isn't well made, but it is simply a dumb idea. All of the product literature implies that this product MAKEs ice cream, as if it actually chilled the cream mixture. What they don't tell you directly is that you have to chill the mixer bowl in your freezer for many hours before you can use it. I can say that 4 hours wasn't enough, and all I got was soup.

I can make more ice cream faster and better using a bag of ice and my Sears ice cream maker in about 25 minutes. No long annoying waits for the bowl to chill!

The only creative idea in this product is that it allows you to mix in 1 -3 different streams of solids like mini-M&Ms or crushed Heath bars while you are extruding a cone. I never got to try this because I sent the whole thing back, but I think I could do as well with a spoon and save a lot of money and effort.

And incidentally, cleaning this thing is a major project. There are lots of pieces to be hand washed and dried, including the little mix-in reservoirs.

Cuisinart should be ashamed of foisting this thing on us.

Cuisinart ICE-20 Automatic 1-1/2-Quart Ice-Cream Maker, White Overviews

Whatever your style, the Cuisinart Automatic Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker will help make a delicious frozen dessert to match it! Make fat-free sorbets, low-fat frozen yogurts, rich ice creams up to 1-1/2 quarts quick and easy!

I've had terrific results with this making ice cream, yogurt, & especially sorbets. The learning curve is quick enough to be fun & complex enough to keep you busy for a while. Freezing dulls the taste buds, so your base - whatever it is - should taste just a little too sweet, a little too strong (this is one of the reasons why melted ice cream is kinda... gross). This also makes it important to concentrate flavors, which can be a challenge.

Here's a recipe template: SLOWLY reduce 2 cups of wine by half - I use a slow cooker with the lid off - it takes hours, but you don't have to do anything. If you want, infuse the wine with herbs, spices, citrus peel, small frogs, whatever, during this time (it may take more than you think to have the right presence). Strain if necessary. Stir in 2/3 - 1 cup sugar, till dissolved. Add this syrup to 2-3 cups fruit juice or puree. Add something for a little tartness, if necessary, a couple of teaspoons vodka or other appropriate liquor (or perhaps a couple tablespoons of raw wine), chill the base well & proceed.

I second all the advice about having everything cold & working quickly once the cannister comes out of the freezer. I took & extended a couple of tips in the reviews: I store the cannister in the freezer with 3 freezer-gel packs inside it, & I cover the top hole of the machine with a freezer-gel pack wrapped in a dish towel while the machine's working.

Have fun.

Must Have! - Judith B. Baum - San Antonio, TX USA
I love ice cream and now I can make it and eat it in 20 minutes! I keep two bowls in the freezer so I always have one ready to use. I fix the ingredients first, then take the bowl out of the freezer, pour in the mix and 20 minutes later have ice cream. I have made many kinds of ice cream, all turning out well, using Ben & Jerry's basic recipe. Every kitchen needs this appliance!

Rich, Yummy Ice Cream EZ, EZ, EZ!! - S. Broumley - Harbor Springs, MI USA
How did I live without this?? It literally takes me five minutes to put together the ingredients for basic vanilla ice cream, then let this wonderful machine do its thing for 30 minutes and you're done! No cranking, no rolling, no watching over it... just plain EZ. I add 1/2cup of cocoa powder for a rich dark chocolate flavor, throw in cookies, fresh or frozen fruit, there's no end to the choices! Makes a full quart of ice cream in each batch.

**Hint** It you're giving this as a gift - take the freezer-bowl out of the box and freeze it for 24hrs prior to giving it. (having to wait for that just KILLED me!!)

Rival GC9155 Gel Canister 1-1/2-Quart 2-Piece Electric Ice-Cream Maker

Rival 1.5 Quart Gel Canistor Ice Cream Maker...Using a fast-freezing gel canister this machine whips up yummy ice cream in just 30 minutes with no messy rock salt or ice. Auger-style mixing paddle blends and aerates the ice cream to a rich and creamy consistency. Made of plastic and metal; Fast Freezing Gel Canister Technology; Auger Style Mixing Paddle Mixes and Aerates Ice Cream to a Creamy Consistency; Gel Canisters Nest for Compact Freezer Storage; Makes Ice Cream in 30 Minutes; No Rock Salt or Ice Required.

I made some pistaschio ice cream a little over 2 hours ago with the ice cream maker and it was my first time using it. I have great ice cream here: not hard solid frozen but a nice soft ice cream. I used more heavy cream in relation to the half and half in the recipe and it only took 25 minutes to make instead of 40 minutes. I've had the bowls that you are supposed to freeze in the freezer for the last week [maybe the other reviewers didn't leave the bowls in the freezer long enough?] and after I mixed the cream mixture with the eggs on the stove I left this mixture in the refrigerator for 3 hours instead of the suggested two in the booklet.

I had no problems with this machine, and the ice cream is very similar to the homemade I remember as a child. Also it is very quiet and believe me, it beats turning that crank and having your arm give out first anyday!

I suggest you just leave the bowls in the freezer when not in use, and chill your mixture longer before you make it up.

.....now I can't wait to make some Soy ice cream next weekend!

6 QT, Old Fashioned, Solid Pine Barrel, Ice Cream Maker, Black Plastic Motor Housing, Die Cast Aluminum Hand Crank, Aluminum Canister With Plastic Lid, Bucket Handle & Stirrer, Easy To Use & Clean.

We love our icecream maker! It is great to be able to choose from hand crank or automatic. When using the automated churner the motor stops automatically when the icecream is done churning so you have to keep and eye on the icecream maker. The kids love to hand crank it but get tired before the icecream is done. We use the vanilla ice cream recipe to make all our icecream we just add flavored milk from a local dairy to flavor it. We have made rootbeer, strawberry, and cotton candy icecream so far and look forward to making banana, coffee, and chocolate soon.
