This little gadget is great and has been well worth the cash. I make yogurt once a week for our lunches (usually starting it Sunday afternoon so it's perfect by Monday morning) and its 1) delicious, 2) high fructose corn syrup FREE, 3) EASY, 4) did I mention delicious?, and 5) easily tailored to whatever yogurt-y taste/texture you like. The thermometer it comes with tells you when the milk is in the perfect range for adding starter (a scoop of yogurt from a previous batch or a chemical you can purchase, either way), so I never have to worry about when to do what.

I love it.

I thought about buying this for over a year because I wasn't sure I'd actually use it, but I do. Every week! I've already served several friends my fresh yogurt and successfully converted them into making their own too!

Like all yoghurt "makers," this one aims to fill a demand in a process that does not require any such machine. A pot / jar wrapped in a blanket and placed in a warm spot (possibly the cabinet above the fridge, next to the heater, or my favorite, the warm oven after baking), a thermos-flask, or a warmed lunch box/cooler replaces this thingamajig easily.
Though do buy a thermometer, as first heating the milk to ca. 176°F/80°C and then cooling it to ca. 113°F/46°C before adding the starter culture (store bought greek yoghurt/powdered culture) reduces unwanted bacterias and ensures the thermophilic yoghurt culture thrives. This is simpler, quicker, and cheaper than any of these gadgets.
But as gadgets go, it has a nice laboratory look about it, evoking a modern day Louis Pasteur of the home-made kitchen yoghurts.

I was reading "French Women Don't Get Fat" and found the Donvier Yogurt maker to be one of the authors secrets! I ordered the machine and have already made my first batch. It was creamy with just the right amount of tartness. If you're used to flavored store bought, this may make you pucker. Once you develop a taste for it you can add your own fruit or enjoy plain. I also like saving money, so all you will need is skim milk, powdered non fat milk and a couple tablespoons of your own fresh made as a starter. Enjoy!

I have purchased less expensive models in the past (actually have gone through 2 of the cheaper models) and had the gears strip. This time I stepped up and bought good one, you won't be disappointed.

This product looks nice, does not leak, and performs as advertised. However, the motor is so loud and noisy, you cannot stay in the same room or area with the unit. The factory says that the noise is normal, but other I/C makers we have owned were not as noisy. I will definitely not recommend this I/C maker to anyone.





warning! bad motor on 6 qt freezer - fearless reader - USA
I am very disappointed with the rival White Mountain freezer. If I am lucky in 4-6 weeks I will receive a fed ex sticker to return my defective motor with. The first person I spoke with after using the freezer 3 times and it broke, said they would send me a new moter. That was great. Then they called me back and said, oops, bad info you need to send the bad one back. We know we have issues with bad motors but sorry, you need to send it back and we will try to repair it. After 2 weeks I called back and they said it will take 4-6 weeks just to send a sticker in the mail. Who knows how long before I get a repaired, defective motor back! Needless to say, I will not be purchasing anything from Rival in the future.I will be careful what I buy from Amazon at all. I was very disgusted by this shoddy service as well as the shoddy product I was sold. Thanks for nothing Rival!!!

We purchased the 6 quart electric White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer online and after making about 6 churns of ice cream, the motor begin to excreet a black oily substance onto the top of the churn while processing. After making one contact after another to determine the warranty in attempt to get the motor replaced, I learned that this expensive ice cream freezer has only one (1) year of warranty. The motor cost about .00 to replace. We used the product while camping with our friends. Our friends then purchased the same product. After making 6 churns of ice cream, their motor went bad too. We have deemed this product totally unsatisfactory and will never again brag on the White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer nor recommend to any of our friends. We are now using a .99 ice cream freezer from Walmart which still works after 10 years! The White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer does not live up to the old standards of the White Mountain Ice Cream Freezer that my parents used!

I've had terrific results with this making ice cream, yogurt, & especially sorbets. The learning curve is quick enough to be fun & complex enough to keep you busy for a while. Freezing dulls the taste buds, so your base - whatever it is - should taste just a little too sweet, a little too strong (this is one of the reasons why melted ice cream is kinda... gross). This also makes it important to concentrate flavors, which can be a challenge.

Here's a recipe template: SLOWLY reduce 2 cups of wine by half - I use a slow cooker with the lid off - it takes hours, but you don't have to do anything. If you want, infuse the wine with herbs, spices, citrus peel, small frogs, whatever, during this time (it may take more than you think to have the right presence). Strain if necessary. Stir in 2/3 - 1 cup sugar, till dissolved. Add this syrup to 2-3 cups fruit juice or puree. Add something for a little tartness, if necessary, a couple of teaspoons vodka or other appropriate liquor (or perhaps a couple tablespoons of raw wine), chill the base well & proceed.

I second all the advice about having everything cold & working quickly once the cannister comes out of the freezer. I took & extended a couple of tips in the reviews: I store the cannister in the freezer with 3 freezer-gel packs inside it, & I cover the top hole of the machine with a freezer-gel pack wrapped in a dish towel while the machine's working.

I made some pistaschio ice cream a little over 2 hours ago with the ice cream maker and it was my first time using it. I have great ice cream here: not hard solid frozen but a nice soft ice cream. I used more heavy cream in relation to the half and half in the recipe and it only took 25 minutes to make instead of 40 minutes. I've had the bowls that you are supposed to freeze in the freezer for the last week [maybe the other reviewers didn't leave the bowls in the freezer long enough?] and after I mixed the cream mixture with the eggs on the stove I left this mixture in the refrigerator for 3 hours instead of the suggested two in the booklet. I had no problems with this machine, and the ice cream is very similar to the homemade I remember as a child. Also it is very quiet and believe me, it beats turning that crank and having your arm give out first anyday! Enjoy refreshing summertime treats with the help of this electric ice shaver. Fast and convenient, it can be used to make snowcones, slushies, and other frozen desserts and drinks. To use, simply fill the included ice molds (or a standard ice-cube tray) with water and freeze completely. Dump the ice into the machine and press the oversized power button to start the motor. The unit begins turning the ice into fine, fluffy snow. For safety, the ice shaver features an enclosed ice chamber, which keeps hands away from the shaving blade. Shaved ice dispenses directly into a cup--its cup holder allows for hands-free filling. Then the extra-fun part--creating custom concoctions. Add a Back to Basics premium syrup (or fruit juice, a favorite soft drink, or other flavoring) to the shaved ice and enjoy. The electric ice shaver measures approximately 8" x 6.67" x 14" and its built-in drip tray makes cleanup a snap.
I own this ice shaver for 4 months now. It comes with 2 plastic ice molds, a bunch of paper cups and straws and a cup holder. You may or you may not use the holder as it is easier to hold the cup while shaving the ice. This shaver works with either regular ICE CUBES OR MOLDED ICE. There is a difference with the results when using the molded ice as opposed to the cubes. You get a bit rougher ice shaves when using ice cubes. The shaver is made up of 2 major parts. The corded head where the motor sit, and the base where the blade is and where you put the ice. The base is just a plastic stand so you can just easily dump excess ice to the sink without unplugging the cord. There is a small blue knob at the right side shown on the picture to adjust the height of the blade. Considering also the price I paid for this machine (Price varies but I got it around 20$ at a major national chain store), this is a great value for the buck. Very simple design and works wonderfully. Also consider searching for silicone snow cone cups for household use. Reviewer: sparksfly - See all my reviews I have owned a hand-cranked White Mountain 4-quart freezer for twenty-three years. All freezer parts have held up extremely well. White Mountain has a reputation for quality that has withstood the test of decades. The day before you plan to use the freezer, fill the wooden bucket with water and let it stand overnight. This causes the wood to swell, so the process is neater the next day. Empty the bucket before you set things up to churn. If you set the churn up on a sturdy plastic stepstool, churning will be easier ergonomically. Use the recommended ice-to-salt ratio and be sure to keep the bucket topped up. As you churn, make sure the drain hole in the bucket doesn't get blocked and the brine flows out freely, or you will have salty ice-cream. It is a good idea to put the whole contraption in a shallow plastic basin to catch the brine, because the brine that drains out will murder grass, corrode metal, and stain some wooden surfaces. Churn slowly until the crank will not budge. The best way to do this is to have a small person sit on a folded towel on top of the churn while folks take turns cranking. After the ice cream is firm, remove the dasher, replace the lid, and put a cork in the hole in the lid. (You may have to buy your own cork.) Drain off as much brine as you can without letting brine slip in through the edge of the lid. Add more of the ice-and-salt mixture, mounding it over the top of the bucket. Cover with the towel and let the ice cream "ripen" for a little while in a cool place. After serving, put any leftovers in a plastic box in the freezer. If you want to reclaim some of the salt for future use, you can turn the slurry in the bucket out slowly onto several sheets of newspaper, letting the water run off. Let the salt dry thoroughly in the sun. It is important to wash all parts of the churn thoroughly within a few hours of using them, since the salt slurry is highly corrosive. Kids love the whole process - I frequently tease them into sharing the cranking duties by telling them they may not have any ice cream unless they help. My favorite flavor is peanut butter! Black & Decker IC200 Arctic Twister Ice Cream Mixer

Take your favorite ice cream, low fat frozen yogurt or sherbet and customize it with your choice of mix-ins! Crush and mix in the goodies of your choice by pressing down the lever. Add chips, nuts, granola, dried apricots, cookes and more! Create an instant soft serve treat which is then exuded right into a cone or cup.
Don't pay any attention to the truly uncoordinated people who tell you it takes two or more people to run this machine--I honestly can't figure out why it would! It couldn't be easier & the resulting treats couldn't be better!! Reading some of the reviews of this product just leaves me scratching my head...as such, I apologize for any cynicism you may detect in my review, but I feel the need to counter some of the misinformation out there (and I empathize with the Black & Decker reps who had to deal with some of these cranky people who are too inept to operate a rather simple tool). 1. The "ON" switch does NOT need to be held down like a pulse-button--just turn it on & let go, people...this leaves your hands free to pick up the cone & fill it with the deliciously yummy treat coming out of the Arctic Twister. When you're done, just turn it off again (see, now wasn't that easy?). 2. The idea that it takes too long is hilarious, too. Unless, of course, the 90-seconds it takes to assemble it & scoop in the ingredients is considered a lot of time (certainly not in my book, especially considering the fact that the results are WAY better than a DQ Blizzard). I literally took this product out of the box the first time and was eating an awesome dessert in less than 2 minutes--without reading any directions for assembly or use--it is that simple of a product to figure out. Clean up is a breeze, too. It dismantles with the push of a button & it rinses in the sink, again, in just a few seconds (there are only three pieces to wash). It is easy enough to use that it's not a big deal to reassemble it if someone wants seconds or more people pop in after you've taken it apart--it literally is one of the easiest & most fun food preparation products we own. So the idea that jumping into a car & going to DQ for Blizzards would be somehow more efficient is outrageous (and the closest one to us is only 5 miles away). It would truly take longer just to get our shoes on* & into the car than it would take to run the Arctic Twister! (* = I'm talking a family of four who all tie our own shoes--no other hindrances like diaper bags or anything.) 3. Noisy? Well, the thing DOES have a motor. So does your blender, food processor, popcorn popper & hand mixer! It's not like you're running this thing for any real length of time. In my mind, if you can't handle a bit of noise from a product like this for all of 10-30 seconds, then you are missing the whole point of having a good time using a product that is meant to be fun. Lighten up folks--life is wayyyyy too short! 4. And, no, a regular ice cream scoop is NOT too big to use with this machine (when you see the size of the chute into which you place the ice cream, you'll find this a strange comment, too). No special equipment needed here. 5. Next, I can't imagine there is a kid out there (or many of us adults either) who wait for everyone in the room to have their cones in-hand before taking a lick of theirs...is there now a new etiquette to eating ice cream? I wonder if the comment about waiting for everyone to be served was written by Emily Post (with ice cream dripping down her arm)!? The laws of physics explain pretty well why ice cream melts the longer it is out of the freezer. Therefore, mix it, serve it & eat it--no need to sit and admire it (although it IS pretty darn cool). 6. Finally, the comment about this product being too hard to use if you have arthritis is SO untrue...I have pretty severe arthritis in both my hands and my elbows and had NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER using this machine. The most difficult part was scooping the ice cream from its original container--if you can do this part, you should be fine. If you can't scoop it out & you don't have arthritis, then your freezer temperature is set too low or you should dip the scooper in hot water first. However, once the ice cream is in the Arctic Twister and the motor is turned on, it begins to soften up--and one only needs to push the handle periodically and enough to advance the ice cream down toward the mixing assembly, but a lot of physical effort is not required since the motor does the work of mixing & churning the food. Again, if I could do this without any pain, nearly anyone can. Truth be known, I agree with the comments that the design of this machine could be improved upon, since a fair amount of ice cream is not pushed through the machine (although we, too, have NO issues in licking the remains off the cone-shaped assembly--it's no different than licking the beaters when making a cake! Probably another lapse in the etiquette of our house ;) ). It would probably be nice is there was a way the machine could extrude closer to 100% of the finished product. But this is not enough to make me want to return the machine--and even less of an issue when serving a larger group of people, since the amount wasted remains the same whether making one cone or 50 cones & therefore becomes a relatively minor amount after numerous consecutive servings. I am very impressed that this little gadget is so great at pulverizing the mix-ins, especially in the absence of any sharp parts (there is nothing that could cut you whatsoever--all parts are plastic, but seem sturdy at the same time). I half-expected the chocolcate chips to pose a problem because of their larger size and hard consistency; but they came out tiny & beautifully interspersed amid the Girl Scout Cookies, nuts, sprinkles and whatever else we added. Versus DQ (and other ice cream places), it is nice that you can use as many ingredients as you want (and have a greater variety) without being charged 50 cents or whatever they charge for each one, you can vary the flavor of the base ice cream, and you don't have to pack everyone into the car and stand in long lines and even battle to find a place to sit. The Arctic Twister is convenient and fun and, in short, I highly recommend it! I decided to write a review because I was just about to buy one for my sister's kids for Easter this year and couldn't believe the amount of negative reviews about it.
