Factory Reconditioned Cuisinart ICE-30BCFR Pure Indulgence 2-quart Frozen Yogurt-Sorbet & Ice Cream Maker, Brushed Stainless Reviews By Customers

We are very pleased with this refurb ice cream maker. Because of food allergies, we have to make our own ice cream, and we have had some great flavors the past few weeks. Make sure you realize that it takes more than 30 minutes--that's the actual time in the machine, then it needs to freeze for at least a few hours if not overnight. But it's great! Cuisinart ICE-30BC Pure Indulgence 2-Quart Automatic Frozen Yogurt, Sorbet, and Ice Cream Maker Reviews By Customers

First of all, IMHO this isn't "fully automatic." Basically it's just a big Donvier with a motor instead of a handcrank. You have to freeze the bowl in your freezer and manually turn a switch ON to start it working then OFF when you think it's finished. It doesn't have a timer so you need to keep an eye on the clock as well, then check the ice cream to see if it's done. It takes 20 - 35 minutes so you may be standing watching it spin for up to 15 minutes. Only experience will tell you if it's frozen as much as it's going to. I let mine run past the time in the booklet and it continued to develop fairly rapidly for about 10 more minutes. At that point it looked like typical soft serve ice cream so I figured it was done. Unfortunately I didn't think to pre-freeze the "airtight container" I needed to transfer the ice cream to. I just pulled out an appropriate size Pyrex bowl with lid and started shoveling ice cream. Big mistake!! It liquefied the instant it hit the bowl. I put the portion I'd shoveled back in the ice cream maker bowl and stirred it into the still-frozen remainder, then transferred it to the now much cooler bowl (working faster this time.) After that I quickly put the covered bowl into the freezer for the prescribed 2 hours. The maker bowl was still plenty cold and the leftovers that I scraped off the sides for my chef's share had a much firmer consistency than the bulk I'd transferred to the Pyrex. Another tip is to make the mixture in a bowl that has a pour spout. I didn't think about that either, I just followed the directions to use a mixing bowl and had to use a ladle to put the base in the machine.

All in all, I think this is as good as it gets for the money. You really do have to spend a whole lot more to get one that will freeze the ice cream on it's own and not take up half the freezer getting the bowl ready. Overall it's large so you'll need to figure out where to store it when it's not in use. However, the machine itself looks nice as all Cuisinart products do so leaving it out is an acceptable option if you have the counter space. The top has a good size hole in it so it will collect dust and so on inside if you leave it out. I wish it included a little piece to put over the hole. It seems pretty easy to clean up the parts after making the ice cream. The motor seems strong enough for the job and didn't strain or slow as the product froze.

AWFUL - Amie Roper -
I have been wanting an ice cream maker for about 3 years. I finally recieved this one for christmas this year. This is an awful machine and will be going back to the store tomorrow. It never makes ice cream. All it does is spin milk around for 35 mins with no other effect. Don't waste your time or money!

While some reviewers seem to have had some negative issues with this machine, I've had none but positive. It's attractive, fits nicely on the countertop, easy to access and clean, and, best of all, makes lots of ice very reliably. I found no problem with start-up: took it out of the shipping package, swabbed it out with some baking soda and water, poured in water, and turned it on. Got ice fast! Ice isn't cubes but, being rounded, fits better in the glass. Machine keeps a constant supply available until water runs out. Then I simply open the top-sided lid, pour in a gallon of spring water, and within minutes have all the ice I want or need. I can hear the ice dropping into the well as it's made, but this does not annoy: it merely reassures me that the next time I want to dip into it, I'll find ice and plenty of it. I heartily recommend this little item.

Ice Tray Broke, Can't Get Help - MGA - Pittsburgh, PA
I've used this ice maker every day for most of 2 years. I know its out of warranty, but when an ice cube got stuck under the tray, it cracked up the side. I'm willing to buy a new ice tray, but can't get any help to do so. I'm getting told that there are no parts available for it. So because a 2 dollar plastic part broke, I'm out 0. Up till now, I've had no problems with this ice maker, but if you need help later on, don't expect much. My initial review was 1 star, but it should be 4 stars for product and 1 star for product/customer service. What good is any product without some kind of customer service? Your not going to buy a car if the tires that come on it are not replaceable and when worn out, you have to buy another car, are you? ,000 or 0. It does not matter.

Play and Freeze Mega Ice Cream Maker,Quart,Blue

| Monday, December 21, 2009

I gave these to family members as Christmas gifts. We all take them camping and each family brings the fixings for their favorite flavor of ice cream. The young children do lose interest rather quickly and the adults end up finishing the ice cream, but when it's done, everyone enjoys sampling all of the different flavors - anywhere from four to six different flavors. We have a fun time making the ice cream and it is a great family event.

Loads of noisy fun!! - Jennifer D. Macdonald - Dallas TX
We really enjoyed playing with this ball although it made a lot of noise rolling on the floor. We rolled it on carpet to reduce the noise, but still a lot of rattling from the ice inside. We forgot that you have to stop and stir your ice cream occasionally and it only froze around the outside of the cylinder. We had more of a milk shake when we were finished. I imagine openning it repeatedly would get a little messy.

This is certainly not for making lots of or very creamy ice cream. However, it is lots of fun and took me back to the days of making ice cream in coffee cans rolled across Mom's kitchen floor. This is a lot of fun for families. Makes enough for a family of 4 to share for a treat. Just don't plan on watching a movie while rolling your treat.

Good time. :)

What a pain... - A. Jones - In the Woods, WA United States
So, I am generally a person who will tolerate minor irritations well. I am even known to look past some pretty significant problems with a product, assuming it performs its function well. Suffice it to say, this product managed to make me to crazy, not only have I decided to write a review to keep people from falling for this ball of crap, but find myself keeping complete strangers from buying this when I see them with it in the store!

I have 3 young boys who love ice cream. Shocker, I know. Anyway, I thought this would be a terrific way to help them become involved in the making of the ice cream. Oh, was I ever wrong!

-Heavy, hard, and not really round enough to roll with any gusto. You cannot kick it like a soccer ball, so you are left shoving it with your hands and watching as it rolls completely off course and turns into a game of keep away from the kids. Okay, so that part is kind of funny.

-As the ice melts, you are getting soaked! I had to do this indoors as my husband absolutely refused to allow it out on the grass because the saltwater would kill the grass! So I was left with a floor soaked with saltwater! If you decide to do it without the salt, it still soaks everything and takes even longer to freeze the ice cream.

-Do not even get me started on the scraping...

-It takes an incredible amount of ice for what you get in return. As others mentioned, it is not standard ice cube tray size, thus making it even more inconvenient.

-The yield is ridiculous! Try splitting 2 cups of ice cream with 3 kids who just expended 1000 calories to make it.

Bottom line, while this seems great in concept, it totally fails to deliver. It is taking up space in a cupboard because I will not even Freecycle it lest I burden someone else with this piece of junk.

Fun to use, great to eat - Jayne R Briney - California
My daughter had received the smaller size of the Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker for her birthday and had a blast with it. I ordered several of the larger size for family Christmas gifts. It's fun to make the ice cream and then eat it.

Ok,
Yet another great find at my tiny little goodwill store - .00 and they said they would take it back if it did not work properly LOL for 3 bucks I guess it's worth a shot...
First of all, I read a bunch of the reviews about the bowl not freezing so I was afraid that this might happen to me. I put the bowl in the freezer for a day and I could still hear the liquid swishing around - I was anxious to try it anyway and ended up with... liquid... ok... i was going away so I put the bowl back in the freezer and left it for the 4 days that I was gone - still not solid... hmm getting a bit frustrated now... looked at the temperature dial for my freezer and saw that it was set a bit too low (meaning a higher freezer temp) so I adjusted the dial one notch and waited about 24 hours.
YAY!!! a frozen bowl - the problem was my temp setting. Once I fixed that all was well. The bowl freezes up perfectly in less than a day now. I have used the simple vanilla recipe twice - once with oreos and once with 'green & black' organic baking chocolate chopped up - yummy and perfect - came out like soft serve but was the perfect texture after an hour or so in the freezer. I've made the peach frozen yogurt, easy and good. A few days ago I made the gourmet vanilla - added finely chopped oreos and it basically turned into chocolate cookies and cream ice cream - decadent! That was gone in one sitting between the four of us. I found that the custard recipe seems to decrease a bit when cooked, so you may want to increase your amounts a bit - you may have to play with it to get it right. Anyway, the cuisinart does what it is supposed to; without the bother of rock salt - nice.

Cuisinart Ice 20 Ice-Cream Maker - Carol Schlotterbeck - Kokomo, IN
I bought this product on the recommendation of my son to make cranberry ice for Thanksgiving. I did everything that I expected it to do. Great machine.

It is just a noisy milk-shake maker - Rat Kiley - SF Bay Area, CA
I feel deceived by the marketing department of Cuisinart. The box says it is an ice cream maker, but if you read the instructions carefully you can tell that it doesn't make ice cream but milkshakes instead. You won't be able to store the "ice cream" you make in this machine in your freezer without it turning into a chunk of ice. The cooling capacity of the bowl that comes with the machine isn't sufficient to make real ice cream. Maybe if you bought a replacement bowl, froze both of them overnight in your freezer, then ran it for 20 minutes to start the batch, and swapped bowls, maybe it would make actual ice cream - I don't know. It also makes a lound grinding / vibrating noise while it is in operation. Also I noticed that it doesn't churn the ice cream well enough - sometimes you have to stir it through the hole in the top to keep it from getting stuck.

I recommend sticking with the old fashioned ice cream makers that use rock-salt and ice, or buy an ice cream maker with a compressor. However, if you have an instant use for 1 1/2 quarts of ice cream every time you make it, then this machine could work for you. Just be prepared to consume it all before it melts.

Great product. Shipped as promised and packed well. The price was great, too. I would buy from this seller again.

Waste of Money - N. Pickle -
I was interested in making ice cream. A family member purchased this for me. I tried on several occasions with different recipes to make my own ice cream only to be disappointed. After years of holding onto this hoping I would somehow find a magic combination to make it work, I find it requires a colder freezer then the one I have. I have a normal fridge and freezer. I'll be looking for another ice cream maker in the future. In the meantime this one will be helping to fill our local landfill, sadly enough.
