Play and Freeze Mega Ice Cream Maker,Quart,Blue

| Monday, December 21, 2009

I gave these to family members as Christmas gifts. We all take them camping and each family brings the fixings for their favorite flavor of ice cream. The young children do lose interest rather quickly and the adults end up finishing the ice cream, but when it's done, everyone enjoys sampling all of the different flavors - anywhere from four to six different flavors. We have a fun time making the ice cream and it is a great family event.

Loads of noisy fun!! - Jennifer D. Macdonald - Dallas TX
We really enjoyed playing with this ball although it made a lot of noise rolling on the floor. We rolled it on carpet to reduce the noise, but still a lot of rattling from the ice inside. We forgot that you have to stop and stir your ice cream occasionally and it only froze around the outside of the cylinder. We had more of a milk shake when we were finished. I imagine openning it repeatedly would get a little messy.

This is certainly not for making lots of or very creamy ice cream. However, it is lots of fun and took me back to the days of making ice cream in coffee cans rolled across Mom's kitchen floor. This is a lot of fun for families. Makes enough for a family of 4 to share for a treat. Just don't plan on watching a movie while rolling your treat.

Good time. :)

What a pain... - A. Jones - In the Woods, WA United States
So, I am generally a person who will tolerate minor irritations well. I am even known to look past some pretty significant problems with a product, assuming it performs its function well. Suffice it to say, this product managed to make me to crazy, not only have I decided to write a review to keep people from falling for this ball of crap, but find myself keeping complete strangers from buying this when I see them with it in the store!

I have 3 young boys who love ice cream. Shocker, I know. Anyway, I thought this would be a terrific way to help them become involved in the making of the ice cream. Oh, was I ever wrong!

-Heavy, hard, and not really round enough to roll with any gusto. You cannot kick it like a soccer ball, so you are left shoving it with your hands and watching as it rolls completely off course and turns into a game of keep away from the kids. Okay, so that part is kind of funny.

-As the ice melts, you are getting soaked! I had to do this indoors as my husband absolutely refused to allow it out on the grass because the saltwater would kill the grass! So I was left with a floor soaked with saltwater! If you decide to do it without the salt, it still soaks everything and takes even longer to freeze the ice cream.

-Do not even get me started on the scraping...

-It takes an incredible amount of ice for what you get in return. As others mentioned, it is not standard ice cube tray size, thus making it even more inconvenient.

-The yield is ridiculous! Try splitting 2 cups of ice cream with 3 kids who just expended 1000 calories to make it.

Bottom line, while this seems great in concept, it totally fails to deliver. It is taking up space in a cupboard because I will not even Freecycle it lest I burden someone else with this piece of junk.

Fun to use, great to eat - Jayne R Briney - California
My daughter had received the smaller size of the Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker for her birthday and had a blast with it. I ordered several of the larger size for family Christmas gifts. It's fun to make the ice cream and then eat it.
