I read other people's recommendation to get another freezer bowl, so I did - what a life saver! thank you all!! xxoo!!! They are not kidding - if you are expecting more than 3 or 4 people, the extra bowl is a must. Also, for those of you toying with ice cream mixes - Dean Jacobs all the way. It is by far the best. You can really taste the quality - just like dairy queen's it is that smooth. Recipe calls for 1 cp heavy cream and 1 cp whole milk. Use 1.5 or 2 cps heavy cream with the 1 cp whole milk - maybe thats what makes it so smooth? Check Special Price!

Nice bowl, but didn't fit my ice cream maker - M. Smith - Knoxville, TN
I purchased the Cuisinart 1 1/2 quart soft serve ice cream/yogurt maker from Amazon several weeks ago. Enjoyed it so much I ordered an additional freezer bowl- also for a Cuisinart 1 1/2 quart soft serve ice cream maker. Unfortunately I threw away the box it came in before I tried out the new bowl. To my surprise (and dismay) it didn't fit. Without the packaging, it was unreturnable (my fault). Who would have thought Cuisinart would make two different 1 1/2 quart soft serve ice cream makers?! Valuable lesson learned.

This worked well, but not for kids. It was too heavy and all the adults ended up having to roll it. They also lost interest in about 10 minutes--which wasn't long enough to finish making the ice cream.
Since the first time we've used it, the adults roll it around (gently as it can leak if you're too rough). We know what we're in for, so it's not too bad.

I picked the big one as the reviews for the smaller one made it sound like the small one is difficult to clean.

Cleaning has been fine on this model. And the ice cream tastes pretty good! Check Special Price!

So my little girl said she wanted a slushie maker for her birthday and the wife and I spotted this item at a discount store. We spotted the the name "Nostalgia Slush Ease" and figured this would be a nice little gift the entire family would enjoy. We got the product home, followed the directions and found that this product doesn't even work.

You fill the middle canister with Ice and salt, then turn the motor on and the canister starts spinning. After about 5 minutes the cheap plastic gears start clicking. The machine locks up and there's really nothing you can do. You end up with a cold drink and nothing more. Don't waste your money.

I ordered my Donvier a couple of weeks ago, in spite of some negative reviews, because I've used this type of ice cream maker before and I like the hand cranking, no-salt method. It's also small and easy to store. Since I received my Donvier I have experienced every problem listed by a negative reviewer for this product, and I have found the single solution to all of them.

When I got the Donvier I made some ice cream right away and it came out perfect--yay! Then I thought, hmm, better with a little less sugar. So I tried it again. Disaster! The mixture got all slushy, with too-large ice crystals, and it never really froze. This sounded suspiciously like one of the negative reviews I'd read, but since the first batch was great, I tried again. WORSE! Not even any ice crystals this time. The Donvier I now possessed could not freeze an ice cube. I started thinking "defective product," and was considering sending it back. But then I remembered reading recently that self-defrosting freezers often change temperatures in order to keep frost from building up, and I wondered if it wasn't a temperature issue.

As an experiment, I lowered my freezer temperature setting by 2 notches, and then refroze the Donvier. When I went to make ice cream with the same mix that would not freeze at all before, suddenly it was freezing way too fast! The handle became stuck, and the lid kept popping off! Too cold, Goldylocks!

So I set the freezer to the middle setting. Now my Donvier performs just like all those ones with the five star reviews. Ahhhh.

Lesson for the consumer: If you are going to use a Donvier, be prepared to manage your freezer temperature. You can get an inexpensive freezer thermometer, or experiment like I did.

Lesson for Donvier (and the reason I knocked a star off of your wonderful product): This needs to be in the documentation. It's not enough to tell people that they should have their freezer at below zero, because everyone assumes theirs is already. You need to put a paragraph in your little book that talks about the ideal temperature--not too cold, not too warm--and how to find it. Good docs make a five star product. Check Special Price!

Just picked one up at a thrift store yesterday for . Pretty much new in box too. MAnual was missing, but that's online. I have made vanilla ice cream (Alton Brown's recipe) and Lemon Lime Basil Sorbet so far. Great results with both. Followed the freezing instructions, and made sure to let the "finished" ice cream ripen in the freezer for a few hours. It hels my freezer runs at -3 F.

I'm a shameless ice cream junkie, so I have used and abused this ice cream maker ever since I was in high school--even took it to college with me! The Donvier is so durable and versatile. Ice cream makers are indispensable for anyone serious about ice cream since the tastes is unrivaled, so here's what I love most about the Donvier (compared to other makers I've used):

1) It's silent!
2) Doesn't have to be plugged in--gives you freedom to move it around (and also means you don't have a motor/electronics to worry about burning out)
3) Only requires a stir every couple minutes (you don't have to constantly crank this thing)
4)It's fast. My pint-size Donvier is ready in 15-20 minutes; the quart size is ready in about 20-25 minutes (depends how cold your mixture is to start with).
5) Easy to clean: throw plastic parts in the dishwasher, and just run water over the metal cylinder, wipe it out and throw it back in the freezer.
6) Always ready: I keep mine in the freezer so I can make ice cream on a whim--never have to worry about ice, salt, and the accompanying mess.

This is a great ice cream maker and produced superb results with a little planning and a bit of effort. Overall, it is a bit bulky, I was surprised by how heavy it was but given the built in compressor I guess that is to be expected. Its also a bit noisy so I move it out of the kitchen while it runs. I've made both traditional custard and American-style ice cream recipes with incredible results but you do have to add AT LEAST 10-20 minutes of extra freezing time in the machine over what it suggests if you don't want to let it rest in the freezer, especially if you're making ice cream in a warm summery kitchen.

A few tips, things to know:
-The opening in the lid to add your own "mix-ins" or melted chocolate is tiny and annoying. Just forgo using the lid altogether and drape a kitchen towel over it to keep the tiny splatters and your curious cat out.
-In order to keep the motor clean, I covered it with plastic wrap and then poked the paddle through it. I wished I had figured this out the first time I started using it, you can't exactly put the motor under water so now the top of the machine with the motor is a bit sticky even though I used a toothbrush to get my first messy attempts at melted chocolate off the machine.
-DON'T DON'T DON'T remove the paddle/motor until you are sure you are done making the ice cream. Trying to get it back together and lined up correctly is a pain. This is also why you should just forgo the lid altogether if you want to add stuff at the end of mixing.

Pros
-fast and easy, no having to plan ahead. I always get to make ice cream on a whim and the container and wand are super easy to clean
-multiple batches and no re-freezing
-easy to operate
-inexpensive

Cons
-a bit noisy

Not a great machine - a huge disappointment in fact - tmp - Nashville, TN
I purchased the Lello 4070 in March 2009 in order to upgrade from a cheap ice cream machine that had a canister that had to be kept in the freezer at all times if I wanted to make ice cream on a whim. I wanted the convenience of this type of machine & the space back in my freezer. I have to say that I've never been happy with this ice cream maker's performance. I wish now that I'd paid more for a better quality product. I bought the machine based on the good reviews and am disappointed. The quality of the ice cream it produced was never better than my previous machine which was a Deni machine! The other problem is that you can only put very small quantities of custard (2 cups to be exact) in the canister at a time and since most custard batches produce more than 2 cups - that would mean I would need to run each batch of ice cream in two parts. That's not very convenient nor timely. The biggest problem is that after only using the machine 4 times - it seems to have died! Every time I plug the machine in, it trips the fuse and will not turn on under any circumstances. I'm left with either sending the ice cream maker to Lello repair which doesn't appeal as I kind of hate the machine or getting a partial refund from Amazon. Save yourself the hassle and invest in a better machine. It's not very good and I can't really recommend it to anyone. It underwhelms in it's performance...

Shoddy product, non-existent customer service - J. Walker -
Unit arrived broken (you could hear the screws rattling around on the inside). Took several days, several e-mails and several phone calls to actually get to someone from Lello customer service. They said send the broken part to them (which I did, at a cost of .00) and they would ship another one right out. Three weeks passed ... another round of calls to Lello (most of which go through to an answering machine). They said that they were out of stock and would send me another part when they arrived from Italy in a month. Eight weeks later, no part, no answer from Lello. I wouldn't ever buy one of their products again. This one is going back to Amazon. It might be great if it works, but who can tell if it's broken upon arrival and you can't get it fixed?

I have recently purchased this product about a week ago and have made 3 successful ice cream recipes so far. The first thing I noticed when turning on the machine is that it is rather noisy, although the kids didn't complain about not being able to hear the TV. The candy crusher was a bit of a disappointment, as it is quite cheaply made I thought the cold smarties were going to break the flimsy plastic apart. I would recommend using a food processor instead of the candy crusher, for ease of use, and the amount of elbow grease it takes to grind a small box of Smarties is mind boggling. The upside of the ice cream maker you ask? Well, the ice cream is AMAZING!! Who knew that home made ice cream would taste one thousand times better than the stuff you buy in the store, even the really expensive brands. It is so fresh and without all the additives that they cram in there, have you ever read the ingredients on store bought? The ice cream maker's texture is a bit soft, but firms up in no time in the freezer to a wonderful consistency of hard ice cream. The whole family enjoys the process of making the ice cream and eating it together with all the inevitable oohs and ahhs. Check Special Price!

I've made ice cream with this machine four times and it has been delicious every time with every recipe that I have tried. I made a mistake the first time I used it (I don't count that time), I didn't read the instructions as closely as I should have, the Deni should be turned on and the cylinder should be turning at all times, if you stop the machine during the process, it doesn't turn back on and your ice cream process is over, finished or not! Lesson learned... :)

I received this as a present, originally had an issue with the freezer canister, and called Customer service and they immediately sent out an replacement. Since it was only a part that needed to replaced, they sent me that one part. I had it within 2-3 days of calling them. Since then it has worked beautifully. My 3 year old daughter loves helping me make the ice cream.

OK but not as good as my old Deni Scoop Factory - C. M. Horace - San Francisco
I bought the Deni ice cream maker with candy crusher (Model 5210) to replace my older Deni Ice Cream Factory machine. I've made ice cream now three times in this new one, and all three times the motor stops churning before the ice cream gets to the soft serve phase. It makes an uneven and inconsistent product that is more frozen to the sides of the cannister and bottom of the cannister, while the ice cream in the center is still very runny. The third time this happened, I took the cannister off the new machine and finished it off on my old one. The old one churned the ice cream to the perfect fluffy soft serve consistency, the new one is dense and runny, and freezes rock hard. I am disappointed the newer model isn't as good as my old one. The motor base is light weight, flimsy and all plasticized, while the older version (Model 5100) is a great little machine that is sturdy and solid. I expected more from the new model, thought it would be improved and even better. But sadly, it isn't. I would save my pennies and not purchase this one. At least the cannister and paddle fits my old one, now I have spare parts! The extra cannister will come in handy if I need a larger amount of ice cream. As another user discovered, this is not worth the box it came in . . . we used it twice and had to stop and start it several times to get it to keep turning. The third time the ice cream process didn't complete before the filled drum refused to turn. Then we threw it away!
