This is a great ice cream maker and produced superb results with a little planning and a bit of effort. Overall, it is a bit bulky, I was surprised by how heavy it was but given the built in compressor I guess that is to be expected. Its also a bit noisy so I move it out of the kitchen while it runs. I've made both traditional custard and American-style ice cream recipes with incredible results but you do have to add AT LEAST 10-20 minutes of extra freezing time in the machine over what it suggests if you don't want to let it rest in the freezer, especially if you're making ice cream in a warm summery kitchen.

A few tips, things to know:
-The opening in the lid to add your own "mix-ins" or melted chocolate is tiny and annoying. Just forgo using the lid altogether and drape a kitchen towel over it to keep the tiny splatters and your curious cat out.
-In order to keep the motor clean, I covered it with plastic wrap and then poked the paddle through it. I wished I had figured this out the first time I started using it, you can't exactly put the motor under water so now the top of the machine with the motor is a bit sticky even though I used a toothbrush to get my first messy attempts at melted chocolate off the machine.
-DON'T DON'T DON'T remove the paddle/motor until you are sure you are done making the ice cream. Trying to get it back together and lined up correctly is a pain. This is also why you should just forgo the lid altogether if you want to add stuff at the end of mixing.

-fast and easy, no having to plan ahead. I always get to make ice cream on a whim and the container and wand are super easy to clean
-multiple batches and no re-freezing

Not a great machine - a huge disappointment in fact - tmp - Nashville, TN
I purchased the Lello 4070 in March 2009 in order to upgrade from a cheap ice cream machine that had a canister that had to be kept in the freezer at all times if I wanted to make ice cream on a whim. I wanted the convenience of this type of machine & the space back in my freezer. I have to say that I've never been happy with this ice cream maker's performance. I wish now that I'd paid more for a better quality product. I bought the machine based on the good reviews and am disappointed. The quality of the ice cream it produced was never better than my previous machine which was a Deni machine! The other problem is that you can only put very small quantities of custard (2 cups to be exact) in the canister at a time and since most custard batches produce more than 2 cups - that would mean I would need to run each batch of ice cream in two parts. That's not very convenient nor timely. The biggest problem is that after only using the machine 4 times - it seems to have died! Every time I plug the machine in, it trips the fuse and will not turn on under any circumstances. I'm left with either sending the ice cream maker to Lello repair which doesn't appeal as I kind of hate the machine or getting a partial refund from Amazon. Save yourself the hassle and invest in a better machine. It's not very good and I can't really recommend it to anyone. It underwhelms in it's performance...

Shoddy product, non-existent customer service - J. Walker -
Unit arrived broken (you could hear the screws rattling around on the inside). Took several days, several e-mails and several phone calls to actually get to someone from Lello customer service. They said send the broken part to them (which I did, at a cost of .00) and they would ship another one right out. Three weeks passed ... another round of calls to Lello (most of which go through to an answering machine). They said that they were out of stock and would send me another part when they arrived from Italy in a month. Eight weeks later, no part, no answer from Lello. I wouldn't ever buy one of their products again. This one is going back to Amazon. It might be great if it works, but who can tell if it's broken upon arrival and you can't get it fixed?

I love this gelato maker! When I first pulled it out of the box, I made strawberry ice-cream with fresh berries and it was the bomb! As usual, anything from Lello is heaped in quality and reliability. You can not go wrong with this little gem. Whip up a frozen treat in less than 30 mins!
